Karin Smithson is a licensed psychotherapist and a member of both the American Psychological
Association (#54806195) and the American Counseling Association (#6214627).
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from
Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and her Master of Arts degree from Argosy
University in Atlanta, Georgia. Karin has done post-graduate work in Argosy
University's PsyD program and is currently pursuing her PhD in Counseling
Education and Practice at Georgia State University. These studies have included
specialized research in the field of trauma, crisis response, resiliency,
addiction, and
counseling methods.
Karin has a wide array of experience working with adults individually and in groups. She has worked in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and private counseling settings with those suffering with an array of mental illnesses, psychological impairments, and addictions. Her therapeutic methods explore ways that individuals' past, present, and future can bring hope and meaning to their lives while recognizing and working through their immediate pain or struggle. Karin enjoys working one-on-one with clients and also specializes in leading therapy groups of different types, including personal growth, stress management, and interpersonal development. Her special counseling interests are in the fields of crisis, loss, grief, divorce, depression, resiliency, and relationships.
Karin has also maintained various roles in the community including teaching, mentoring, and working with children and adults in need. She has served as a guest speaker at numerous venues in the Atlanta area and has considerable experience in writing, event planning, public relations, charitable projects, and personal professional management. Her diverse background helps her to take into account the complexity of each individual's total life and speaks to her holistic therapeutic focus.
Additionally, Karin is involved in organizations such as CSI, an international counseling honor society; LPCA, a professional counseling organization; SACES, a counseling education and supervision organization; and ASGW, a national group therapy association.
