Matthew Hunter, M.S., LAPC, NCC

Associate Professional Counselor

Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Finance from the University of Maryland, Matthew began working at the American Psychological Association in Washington, D.C. managing the budget and financial reporting for the Practice Directorate. While in Washington, Matthew also worked for a fund-raising consulting firm, volunteered as an HIV pre-test counselor for underserved communities, wrote and performed original songs in a local band, and ventured into the world of self-employment as an office relocation consultant. In 1998, Matthew relocated himself to Georgia to begin a second phase of his career in healthcare information technology and services, which culminated in his becoming a founding partner of a national clearinghouse and billing service.

While having enjoyed the success of his first career, Matthew is now using other talents and his strong interest in mental health as a means to realize his ultimate career goals. As a Counselor at The Anxiety & Stress Management Institute, Matthew works with all manner of relationships and life circumstances. Specifically, he is delving into couples counseling and conflict resolution with an eye toward how the concepts may also be applied to small business partnerships. In addition, Matthew is interested in working with stressful life transitions from the adolescent stage through late adulthood—especially during critical times of change that give rise to anxiety and existential confusion. Based on his firm belief that a system is only as viable as it is diverse, Matthew is interested in working with potentially marginalized populations including racial/ethnic minorities, older adults, LGBT, alternative spirituality/nontheistic thinkers, and artists/musicians to elicit the full potential of all members of our society.

Currently working as an Associate Professional Counselor (APC), Matthew uses all forms of therapy including individual, family, and group processing. He is also certified as a general civil mediator and is working toward certification in hypnotherapy and emotionally focused therapy (EFT) in addition to full licensure as an LPC.
