Sam Heys, M.S., Ed.S., LPC, NCC
Licensed Professional Counselor

As a counselor, I have the wonderful opportunity to work with individuals seeking to make changes in the life, whether that may mean learning to live without anxiety or addiction or changing how one sees oneself.
I believe the counseling relationship can be a fulcrum for helping clients alter the narrative of their lives. The power of change is one of the strongest forces in the world, and I believe individuals can make significant changes in their lives, particularly with the encouragement and hope provided by another person.
I am a licensed by the State of Georgia as a Licensed Professor Counselor (#LPC004610). I am nationally certified as a professional counselor by the National Board of Certified Counselors (#83290). I have a Master of Science degree in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University, as well as an Education Specialist degree in Professional Counseling from GSU.
I initially learned to work effectively with individuals one-on-one during my 16 years as a journalist. I reported on stories of great achievement as well as stories of great pain and great loss, and I saw firsthand the healing power in sharing stories. As a journalist, I developed a curious, investigative mindset, good listening skills and the ability to see the world through another’s eyes, which was further developed during a decade as a speechwriter for a Fortune 500 CEO.
Now, as a counselor, I use all these skills to listen to clients and help them figure out what is going on in their lives. I have extensive experience helping clients learn how to manage anger, control anxiety, overcome depression and recover from addiction. In addition, I have taught classes in Anger Management, Drug/Alcohol Relapse Prevention and Parenting Skills at a metro Atlanta detention center.
I have also co-counseled couples and families with Dr. Steven Marrinson, an Atlanta psychologist and the creator of “Family Harmony” – a type of family therapy designed to help couples and families eliminate the destructiveness that is preventing them from working together in a loving relationship.
As a counseling intern at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, I counseled active-duty soldiers and retirees as well as their spouses and children. The issues we worked on included anxiety, panic attacks, depression, bipolar disorder, domestic violence, post traumatic stress disorder, sex addiction and borderline personality disorder.
